He was aboard the USS Marblehead at the Battle of Makassar Strait. He suffered severe burns in the battle. He was treated and evacuated by Dr. Wassell. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from 1945 to 1973 when he retired. His parents were Frederick P. and Allie (Ellsworth) Chariton. His brother was Robert P. Chariton. He was married to Margaret M. (Trelease) Chariton.
